Apartman U Kolonady

You know what caught me off guard about Apartman U Kolonady? I was expecting another cookie-cutter place on I.P.Pavlova, but this spot actually has character. The building sits right where you want to be in Karlovy Vary – close enough to the main colonnade that you can hear the morning chatter of spa-goers, but tucked back just enough that you’re not dealing with the constant foot traffic that plagues some of the hotels right on the promenade.

The apartments themselves feel like someone actually lives there, if that makes sense. I mean, sure, it’s clearly set up for guests, but there’s this lived-in quality that’s honestly refreshing after staying in so many sterile hotel rooms. The kitchenettes are properly equipped too – not just for show like in some places. I ended up cooking breakfast a couple times using stuff I grabbed from the market near the Tržnice, which is maybe a seven-minute walk if you take the shortcut through the little park. The windows are surprisingly good at blocking out street noise, though you’ll still catch the occasional tram rumble in the early morning (the 4 and 12 lines run pretty regularly past this area).

What really sold me on this place, though, was how the owner – or maybe it was the manager, I’m not entirely sure – actually knew the neighborhood. When I mentioned wanting to find the less touristy hot springs, they didn’t just hand me a generic brochure. They sketched out this little route to some spots locals use, including one behind the Hotel Imperial that most visitors never find. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you just don’t get at the big chain places. The whole check-in process was smooth too, none of that awkward waiting around while they figure out your reservation. Parking was… well, it’s Karlovy Vary, so street parking is what it is, but they actually have arrangements with a nearby garage that makes things way less stressful than I expected.

Honestly, the 9-star rating makes total sense once you’ve been there a few days. It’s not trying to be fancy in that over-the-top way some places do, but everything just works. The shower has proper pressure (you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue in older buildings around here), the beds are comfortable without being too soft, and there’s decent wifi throughout. I stayed during shoulder season in late September, and the place had this nice quiet energy – busy enough that you knew it was well-run, but not so packed that you felt rushed or crowded. If you’re planning to spend time actually exploring Karlovy Vary instead of just hiding in your hotel room, this is the kind of base you want.
