Apartment U Medvídka
You know what struck me first about Apartment U Medvídka?
You know what struck me first about Apartment U Medvídka? It’s tucked away on Horova Street in this quiet residential pocket that most tourists never stumble across – which is honestly part of its charm. I mean, you’re still in Karlovy Vary, but you’re living like a local rather than being stuck in some tourist bubble near the main colonnade.
The ground floor setup actually works really well here. No dealing with tiny European elevators or hauling luggage up narrow staircases (trust me, after a day of wandering those steep spa town hills, you’ll appreciate this). The apartment itself has that lived-in feel that’s way more comfortable than sterile hotel rooms – kind of like staying at a friend’s place who happens to have really good taste. The kitchen is properly equipped too, not just some token mini-fridge situation, which comes in handy since Czech grocery stores have amazing bread and local treats you’ll want to try. Plus, eating out every meal in Karlovy Vary can get pricey fast.
What I really liked was how quiet Horova gets in the evenings. During the day you’ve got that gentle hum of local life – people heading to work, kids walking to school – but by night it’s peaceful enough that you can actually sleep with the windows open (something you definitely can’t do near the main spa district where those tourist groups start gathering at like 7 AM). The neighborhood feels safe for evening walks too, and there’s this little pub around the corner that serves proper Czech beer without the touristy markup.
Getting to the famous colonnades takes maybe 10-15 minutes on foot, which is perfect – close enough that you’re not stuck taking taxis everywhere, but far enough that you escape the crowds when you want to. I actually preferred this to staying right in the center because honestly, the main tourist zone can feel a bit overwhelming after a while with all the spa-goers and tour buses. Here you get to experience a bit of real Karlovy Vary life between your sightseeing.
The 8.9 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s not luxury – this is a 3-star place and it feels like one – but everything works properly and it’s genuinely comfortable. The host was responsive when I had questions about local transportation, and check-in was straightforward without any of that awkward key-handoff drama you sometimes get with apartment rentals. Small thing, but there’s decent water pressure in the shower, which you can’t always count on in older Czech buildings. Street parking isn’t impossible to find either, though I’d recommend asking about the local parking situation when you book if you’re driving.
Look, if you want marble bathrooms and room service, this isn’t your spot. But if you’re the type who enjoys actually experiencing a place rather than just visiting it – if you want to buy fresh rolls from the local bakery and figure out which tram line locals take – then U Medvídka hits that sweet spot between authentic and comfortable.
Hotel in Karlovy Vary booking should be done early, especially during film festival season when the city hosts internationally acclaimed cinema events and wellness retreats.

What could be improved: All great.
Great location and communication. Highly recommended. Great location. Very clean and lovely touches that made us feel very welcome. The owner also communicated really well.
Perfect place to visit Karlovy Vary on a budget The apartment has a very good location just a few minutes walk from the main touristic areas. It's was fine for a few days visit. It was clean. It's nice that It has its own entrance and can be easily accessed from the street. The owners spent some effort decorating it and the place had its own charm. It had a small TV with many TV channels. I also liked the retro radio and I would have loved to use it but the guys that stayed in the apartment a few days before we came, managed to brake it.
What could be improved: The beds were kind of hard. Not that comfy. But we've managed to sleep OK. The instructions to get to the apartment were a bit complicated. It involved several steps in finding the place to park the car. It would have been nice to have some instructions where to park the car for a short time at arrival in order to get the keys for the apartment and the long term parking place. Also for the long term parking place it would have been nice to have some GPS coordinates so that I can use my navigator to get there. There was a video showing the way to the parking but it assumed that we left from the apparent. It involved taking a complicated roundabout with many exits and in our case we came from a different exit, which got us confused. It would have been nice to have the street sign of the roundabout and on it marked which exit to take.
Wonderful Really great place to stay and not too far from the town. Includes all the essential kitchenwares and washing machine if you need to use it. The owner has kindly bought milk, butter, doughnuts, tea and coffee as welcome food. Very clear instructions on how to check in and where to park your car. absolutely brilliant.
