Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the ASTORIA Hotel & Medical Spa on Vřídelní street, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s tucked right into that busy stretch where all the spa hotels cluster together, and from the outside it sort of blends in with everything else. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t need to show off.

The thing about staying here is that you’re literally in the thick of Karlovy Vary’s spa district – I mean, you step out the front door and you’re maybe a two-minute walk from the Mill Colonnade. No exaggeration. The thermal springs are practically your neighbors, which is pretty incredible when you think about it. What really got me though was how the staff actually knew their stuff about the treatments. I’ve been to plenty of “medical spas” that are basically just fancy hotels with a few massage rooms tacked on, but these people genuinely understand the whole thermal water therapy thing. The spa facilities aren’t huge – this isn’t some massive resort complex – but they’re thoughtfully designed and, honestly, way more relaxing than those overwhelming mega-spas.

The rooms are comfortable without being flashy, and here’s something I really appreciated: the windows actually open properly, so you can get some fresh air instead of being stuck with recycled AC all night. Parking can be a bit tricky since you’re right in the town center, but the hotel has a garage (which, trust me, you’ll want during the busy summer months when finding street parking is basically impossible). The breakfast setup is solid – nothing revolutionary, but good quality stuff and they do this excellent local pastry that I probably ate too much of. One small thing that bugged me was that the elevators are a bit slow, but I mean, we’re talking about a historic building here, so what do you expect? The 8.6 rating makes total sense to me – it’s the kind of place that gets the important things right without trying to be something it’s not.
