Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of spa hotels in Karlovy Vary, and the Esplanade Carlsbad on Stará Louka actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. When you first walk up, honestly, the building doesn’t scream luxury – it’s got that understated elegance thing going on that you see a lot in this part of the Czech Republic. But once you’re inside, you realize they’ve put their money in the right places.

The location is what really sold me on this place. Stará Louka runs parallel to the main colonnade strip, so you’re literally a two-minute walk from all the hot springs and that whole Habsburg-era spectacle tourists come for, but – and this is key – you’re not dealing with the constant stream of day-trippers walking past your window at 7 AM. I mean, you can still hear the occasional tour group, but it’s way more manageable than the hotels right on the main drag. Plus, there’s decent parking nearby (which, if you’ve ever tried to park in central Karlovy Vary during festival season, you know is basically a miracle).

What struck me most was how the staff actually seemed to know the town. The woman at reception didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – she marked the thermal springs that are less crowded in the mornings and mentioned which cafes serve proper Czech breakfast instead of the overpriced hotel stuff. The rooms themselves are solid 4-star territory, nothing fancy but well-maintained, and the beds are honestly better than some 5-star places I’ve crashed at. You know what really impressed me though? The water pressure in the shower was fantastic, which sounds trivial until you’ve spent three days at a spa hotel with a glorified trickle.

The breakfast setup runs until 10:30 (not the usual 10 AM cutoff), and they actually stock local honey and proper European chocolate, not that generic hotel brand stuff. I’d skip their dinner service though – there are way better traditional restaurants within walking distance, and the hotel staff will point you toward the good ones if you ask. The spa facilities are decent but nothing extraordinary; honestly, you’re better off experiencing the actual historic thermal baths in town rather than staying in the hotel all day. One small thing that bugged me – the WiFi gets spotty on the upper floors, but it’s fine in the common areas and most rooms.

Bottom line: if you want to experience Karlovy Vary without dealing with the chaos of staying right in the thick of things, but still want to roll out of bed and be at the colonnades in five minutes, this place hits that sweet spot. The 8.4 rating makes sense – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it won’t disappoint either, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re trying to actually relax and soak in some thermal waters without breaking the bank.
