Grandhotel Pupp

Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of fancy hotels, but the Grandhotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary is something else entirely. When you first walk up to this massive yellow baroque building on Mirove namesti, you honestly feel like you’re stepping onto a movie set – which, actually, you kind of are since they filmed Casino Royale here. The thing is, it doesn’t feel like a tourist trap at all once you’re inside. The lobby has this old-world elegance that’s genuine, not manufactured, with these incredible crystal chandeliers and marble columns that have been here since 1701. I mean, you can literally feel the history in the floorboards.

What really gets me about this place is how it manages to be both grand and comfortable at the same time. The rooms are spacious – and I’m talking actually spacious, not “European spacious” – with these gorgeous period furnishings that somehow don’t feel stuffy. The beds are phenomenal, which matters more than people admit, and the bathrooms have this perfect old-meets-new thing going on. You know what I love though? The sound of the Tepla River flowing right below your window if you get a room facing that way. It’s this gentle white noise that’s way better than any city hotel’s air conditioning hum. The spa facilities are incredible too, which makes sense given that Karlovy Vary is literally built around hot springs – you’re basically staying at the epicenter of Czech spa culture.

Here’s the thing about location that guidebooks don’t tell you: yes, you’re right in the heart of the historic district, but that means cobblestones and hills everywhere. Wear comfortable shoes, seriously. The hotel’s practically next door to the famous colonnades where people drink the thermal water (tastes terrible, by the way, but apparently it’s good for you), and you’re a two-minute walk to all those colorful buildings lining the Tepla River. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – the hotel has valet service which I’d definitely recommend because navigating those narrow streets with a rental car is… well, let’s just say it’s an adventure. The staff really knows their stuff too, especially about local restaurants beyond the tourist spots. They steered me toward this amazing traditional Czech place called U Fleku that I never would have found otherwise. Honestly, with a 9.2 rating, you’d expect excellence, and the Grandhotel Pupp delivers on that promise while still feeling like a place with real character rather than just another luxury chain property.
