Hotel U Simla

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel U Simla? Walking up to this unassuming building on Zavodni street, I honestly wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s tucked away from the main spa district where all the fancy hotels cluster around the colonnades. But sometimes those are exactly the places that surprise you.

The thing about staying here is you’re actually in a proper residential part of Karlovy Vary, which means you get to see how the town really works beyond all the tourist hustle. There’s this little grocery store maybe two minutes away where I’d grab coffee in the mornings (way cheaper than hotel coffee, obviously), and the walk into the historic center takes about fifteen minutes – long enough to feel like you’re discovering something, but short enough that you won’t mind doing it twice a day. The staff genuinely seems to care about getting things right, which honestly makes such a difference when you’re trying to figure out spa schedules or where to catch the bus to Prague. I remember the front desk guy – I think his name was Pavel? – actually drew me a little map showing which thermal springs were less crowded in the early morning.

What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night. You’re off the main tourist drag, so there’s none of that late-night chatter from people wandering between restaurants and casinos. The rooms are pretty straightforward – clean, decent-sized beds, and the bathroom actually had good water pressure (something you definitely don’t take for granted in older European hotels). Sure, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury touches, but everything works properly, and there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on the basics instead of trying to impress you with flashy stuff. The breakfast was surprisingly solid too – fresh bread, local cheeses, and they actually had decent scrambled eggs, which is rarer than you’d think. I mean, you’re not staying here for the breakfast, but it’s nice when it doesn’t feel like an afterthought. The whole vibe is just… comfortable, I guess? Like staying at a well-run guesthouse where nobody’s trying too hard, but they’re definitely trying enough.
