Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Olympic Palace – I mean, how many “luxury spa hotels” actually live up to the hype? But this place on Zámecký Vrch actually gets it right. The building itself sits up on Castle Hill (which is what Zámecký Vrch means, by the way), so you’re getting these sweeping views over Karlovy Vary’s red rooftops and the Teplá River valley below. The location is sort of perfect – you’re close enough to walk down to the main colonnade and all those famous hot springs, but far enough up the hill that you escape the tourist crowds when you want some peace.

What really struck me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel genuinely luxurious without being stuffy about it. The spa facilities are the real deal – I’m talking proper thermal treatments using the local mineral water that made Karlovy Vary famous in the first place. You know what I loved? They actually explain the history behind the treatments instead of just throwing around fancy names. The staff seems to know their stuff too, which honestly isn’t always a given even at five-star places. The rooms are spacious (thank god, because so many European hotels seem designed for people who travel with nothing but a toothbrush), and the beds are actually comfortable – I slept like a rock every night. Fair warning though: if you’re here during spa season in summer, book your treatments early because it gets busy with well-heeled Germans and Russians who’ve been coming here for decades.

The restaurant surprised me too – I was prepared for typical hotel food, but they’re doing some interesting things with local Czech ingredients. Actually, their sommelier pointed me toward some Moravian wines I’d never heard of that were fantastic. Parking was easy enough (there’s a garage), and check-in was smooth, though the front desk staff’s English is hit-or-miss depending on who you get. One small thing that bugged me: the WiFi can be spotty in some of the rooms facing the valley, though honestly, you’re in Karlovy Vary – maybe it’s time to disconnect anyway. What really sells this place for me is that it feels like they understand what luxury actually means: it’s not about gold-plated faucets or over-the-top service, it’s about everything just working really well. You can walk down to sip the famous (and frankly, pretty awful-tasting) mineral water from the springs, browse the glass shops on the main drag, or just hole up in the spa and pretend the outside world doesn’t exist. Either way, you’re going to sleep well and wake up feeling like you actually got away from it all.
