Lyra Apartments

You know what surprised me about Lyra Apartments? It actually feels like staying in a real Czech neighborhood, not some tourist bubble. The building sits on Tylova street – which honestly, I had to look up on my map the first time – but it’s this lovely quiet residential area that’s still walkable to all the spa action Karlovy Vary is famous for. I mean, you can hear the occasional tram rumbling by, but it’s more of a gentle urban lullaby than anything disruptive.

The apartments themselves are properly spacious, which is refreshing after dealing with those shoebox hotel rooms you sometimes get in European spa towns. Mine had this great little kitchenette that I actually used (shocking, I know), and the bathroom was modern without being sterile. The whole place has that clean, Nordic-influenced design that seems to be everywhere in Central Europe right now, but it works. What really sold me was the attention to small details – good blackout curtains (essential when you’re trying to recover from those thermal baths), decent water pressure, and Wi-Fi that doesn’t give up the moment you try to video call home. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. They gave me actual recommendations for restaurants locals eat at, not just the tourist traps near the colonnade.

Here’s the thing about staying in this part of Karlovy Vary – you’re close enough to walk to the hot springs and all that Habsburg-era grandeur, but you can also duck into a regular Czech pub for dinner without paying resort prices. I’d walk down toward the Teplá River in the mornings before the tour buses arrived, grab coffee from one of those little cafés that don’t bother with English menus, then wander back feeling like I’d discovered something. The 9.1 rating makes sense when you think about it – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything just works the way it should. Parking was surprisingly easy to sort out (they’ll tell you exactly where to go), and the whole area feels safe for wandering around at night. If you’re planning to visit during spa season, book early though – apparently word is getting out about this place.
