Penzion Pavel
You know what?
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Penzion Pavel when I first booked it – I mean, it’s tucked away on Vilová street, which honestly feels more residential than touristy. But that 9.1 rating kept nagging at me, and now I totally get why people love this place.
The thing about staying here is that you’re actually living like a local for a few days. Vilová is this quiet tree-lined street that runs parallel to the main spa district, so you get the best of both worlds – you can walk to all the famous colonnades and hot springs in about ten minutes, but when you come back in the evening, it’s peaceful. No crowds of tour groups or spa-goers chatting loudly outside your window at 7 AM. Pavel (yeah, the owner actually goes by the same name as the pension) keeps the place immaculate, and honestly, the rooms feel more like staying at a well-organized friend’s house than a typical hotel. The floors are real wood – not that fake laminate stuff – and they creak just slightly when you walk around, which I found oddly comforting.
What really sold me on the place was how Pavel knows everything about Karlovy Vary but doesn’t overwhelm you with information unless you ask. He casually mentioned which thermal springs are less crowded in the morning (go to the Market Colonnade around 8 AM, trust me), and when I was struggling to figure out the local bus system to get to the castle, he just sketched out a little map showing the walking path through the forest instead. The breakfast situation is simple but perfect – fresh bread from the bakery down the street, local honey, and coffee that’s actually good. You eat in this small dining room where you’ll probably end up chatting with other guests, which normally I’d hate, but somehow works here.
I should mention that parking can be a bit tricky since it’s a residential area, but there’s usually space on the street, and Pavel will tell you exactly where you’re allowed to park overnight. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star place – clean, comfortable beds, decent WiFi, and bathrooms that have clearly been updated recently. It’s not fancy, but everything works properly, which honestly puts it ahead of some 4-star places I’ve stayed at. The location means you’re walking everywhere, which in Karlovy Vary is actually perfect because the whole city center is designed for strolling between springs and cafes anyway. I ended up extending my stay an extra night because I just felt so settled there – plus, Pavel’s recommendations for local restaurants were spot-on. If you want that authentic Czech spa town experience without paying resort prices, this is your place.
