Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Penzion Valkoun-Lilienfeld on Na Vyhlidce – the street name literally means “at the viewpoint,” which usually screams tourist trap. But you know what? Sometimes those unassuming three-star places end up being exactly what you didn’t know you needed. This little pension sits quietly in one of Karlovy Vary’s residential neighborhoods, about a fifteen-minute walk uphill from the main spa colonnade area, and that distance actually works in your favor. You get the authentic Czech experience without the constant stream of tour groups shuffling past your window at 7 AM.

The owners clearly know what they’re doing – I mean, you don’t accidentally stumble into a 9.5 rating. The rooms have that lived-in comfort that feels more like staying at your well-traveled aunt’s house than a sterile hotel. The floors creak just enough to remind you you’re in an older building, but everything that matters actually works properly (the shower pressure was surprisingly good, and the Wi-Fi didn’t cut out every five minutes like half the places I’ve stayed in smaller Czech towns). What really got me was the breakfast setup – nothing fancy, but they serve it in this bright little room that catches the morning light, and the coffee is strong enough to wake the dead. The couple running the place speaks decent English, though they seemed genuinely happy when I attempted my terrible Czech.

Here’s the thing about the location that most people don’t realize until they’re there: yes, it’s uphill from the spa district, but that means you’re actually closer to some of the better hiking trails that lead up into the forested hills around the city. If you’re planning to do more than just sip mineral water and window shop, this works out perfectly. Plus, there’s street parking right outside – and anyone who’s tried to park near the Grand Hotel Pupp during peak season knows that’s worth its weight in gold. The walk down to Tržiště street and the main thermal springs is pleasant enough, mostly downhill obviously, and you pass through some quieter residential areas where you can peek into local life. Coming back up in the evening, well, that’s a bit of a workout, but honestly after a day of rich Czech food, you’ll probably need it. The neighborhood gets properly quiet after dark, which means you’ll actually sleep instead of listening to tipsy spa tourists stumbling around until 2 AM.
