You know what caught me off guard about the Retro Riverside Wellness Resort? It’s actually retro in the best possible way – think mid-century modern meets Czech spa town elegance, not some kitschy throwback nightmare. I mean, when you’re walking along the Teplá River and you spot this place on Brezova street, it just sits there so naturally you’d think it’s been part of Karlovy Vary’s landscape forever. The building has this wonderful understated confidence that honestly makes some of the flashier hotels nearby look like they’re trying way too hard.
The wellness aspect isn’t just spa marketing speak either – they’ve got this incredible mineral water setup that taps into the same springs the whole town’s famous for. I spent a good hour just wandering between their thermal pools, and the water temperature gradations are spot on (locals will tell you that’s harder to get right than you’d think). The spa treatments use local ingredients too, which sounds gimmicky until you realize Czech spa culture has been perfecting this stuff for centuries. What really impressed me was how quiet everything stays – even during peak season in summer when the main colonnade area gets absolutely packed with tourists, this place maintains this serene bubble. The rooms face either the river or the hillside, and honestly, I’d lean toward the hillside ones because you get these amazing views of the forest without the occasional noise from people walking the riverside path.
The staff actually knows the area, which seems obvious but isn’t always the case at five-star places. When I mentioned wanting to hit some of the lesser-known hot springs, the concierge didn’t just hand me a generic map – she sketched out a walking route that avoided the tourist crowds and included this little bakery on Zámecký vrch that makes the best lázeňské oplatky I’ve had anywhere. Check-in was smooth (they’ve got proper parking, thank god, because finding a spot in central Karlovy Vary can be a nightmare), and the whole vibe just feels… well, authentic. Not authentic like they’re performing authenticity, but genuinely comfortable in its own skin. The 9.3 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place that doesn’t have any glaring flaws and delivers on what it promises without overselling itself. If you’re coming to Karlovy Vary for the full spa experience but want to avoid the massive resort complexes that can feel a bit soulless, this hits that sweet spot perfectly.
Hotel in Karlovy Vary booking should be done early, especially during film festival season when the city hosts internationally acclaimed cinema events and wellness retreats.

What Our Guests Say
Amazing We loved everything about this place. The staff was incredible, the rooms and wellness facilities were super clean and well kept, the breakfast was incredible. The whole hotel was beautiful and we will definitely come back!
What could be improved: Nothing, everything was 100% perfect
Good hotel, I recommend it Good hotel, I recommend it
What could be improved: Hard to find anything negative, maybe the size of the TV screens is too small.
Great relaxing hotel The staff was great. Very intimate feel. Great place to unwind for a couple away from the main area of Karlovy Vary
Reall Great romantic getaway! Will come back for more Amazing location, great spa area, very friendly Russian speaking staff
What could be improved: Cleaning service has left a door to the balcony open and exposed our belongings. Was very unfortunate but thankfully everything was in place.
very good We received a very good help in any point from all the poeple in the hotel espeacially from KAREL which helps up in problom we have had. He is a very unique in the way he understood the problom and how he solved it
Thank you so much dear Karel and all nice poeple
Excellent getaway destination for a couple who wants to relax. Friendly staff, especially Anna, good breakfast, large room, 2-sink bathroom with pocket-door separated toilet, good shower, all super clean, large bed, comfortable pillows, balcony with 2 chairs facing waterfront, excellent pool, whirlpool and sauna, NOT busy at all, umbrella to borrow for the day, proximity to Karlovy Vary, We would not hesitate to come back!
What could be improved: Thermostat regulation +/-5C was ineffective and could not be reset. We had to open the window and balcony door overnight as it was not possible to go below 24C otherwise.(mid-May, at avg 15C outside) Balcony shared with adjacent room ... strangers from the adjacent room passing (unintentionally I would hope) next our open balcony door - that was NOT so great. The glass shower door would not fully close resulting in mini-floods on the bathroom floor. There was no bottle opener, no beer opener (although the minibar had a bottle that would require one - a friendly receptionist came up immediately in response to my phone query to open our wine bottle himself but thought this was the only solution to the problem of openers that sometimes end up becoming guest's souvenires!?), Wifi stopped working at one point but since I had 60G data SIM this was no problem for me. LED lights inside the wardrobes were flaky, flickering at times. Providing disposable cheap bottle openers with effective Axxos advertising would more than offset the cost of occasional opener loss in my opinion. Some of the 5 saunas were not operational but 2 were really good. These are mostly details, the positives far outweigh the negatives
Wonderful weekend trip. The staff was super nice, room was very clean and the food was great. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back.
What could be improved: it was a bit secluded from everything. A fan in the gym would be lovely, it gets very hot and humid in there since it is located next to the pool area.
Exceptional Everything, from spa to the suite room with the view. Good breakfast, stuff speak English. Perfect for couples who wants to relax
What could be improved: Nothing
Would come again Everything was great! Very attentive and nice people. The room is big and clean. Spa area is great. Breakfast also was good, you can choose from quite a few options.
What could be improved: Nothing, all was good.
