Pavlova probably a dozen times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, it’s one of those places that looks better once you’re inside than it does from the street. The woman at the front desk – I wish I could remember her name – gave me directions to this little bakery on a side street that I never would have found otherwise, and she knew exactly which thermal springs would be less crowded in the early morning. That’s the kind of insider information you can’t get from Google Maps. The breakfast spread is pretty typical for the region, but they do this local pastry thing that’s actually worth getting up for. Parking was easier than I expected too – there’s a small lot behind the building, and while it fills up during peak spa season (basically April through October), I managed to snag a spot without too much drama. The 8.3 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises, and in a town where hotel prices can get pretty steep during festival season, the Star feels like decent value for money. Plus, when you’re spending most of your time wandering around sampling mineral waters and soaking in thermal baths anyway, you don’t really need a hotel room that’s going to change your life.
