Honestly, when I first walked up to Stara Louka Apartments, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the building sits on this quiet side street that most tourists probably walk right past without noticing. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. The address says “2patro” which just means second floor in Czech, and yeah, there’s no elevator, so pack light or be ready for a bit of a workout with your luggage.

The thing about staying here is that you’re genuinely in a residential part of Karlovy Vary, not stuck in some tourist bubble. I mean, there’s a little grocery store literally around the corner where the elderly Czech lady behind the counter will try to help you in broken English, and honestly it’s kind of endearing. The apartments themselves are… well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star place. Nothing fancy, but everything works. The kitchenette actually has decent cookware (I was shocked), and the bathroom has one of those European shower situations where water gets everywhere, but the pressure is surprisingly good. The beds are firm – maybe too firm if you’re used to those plush hotel mattresses, but I slept fine.

What really sold me on this place was stepping out in the morning and realizing how easy it is to walk to the main spa district. It’s maybe a 7-minute stroll down to the Teplá River and then you’re right there with all the colonnades and that slightly sulfurous smell of the hot springs that either bothers you or becomes oddly comforting after a day or two. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet at night, which is perfect if you’ve spent the day dealing with tour groups at the springs. There’s this little bakery two blocks over that opens ridiculously early – I’m talking 6 AM – and their koláče are absolutely worth setting an alarm for. The apartment’s windows face the courtyard, so you don’t get street noise, but you will hear neighbors occasionally. It’s just real life, you know? The 7.5 rating makes total sense to me because it’s not trying to be something it’s not. The check-in was straightforward, parking is… well, good luck finding street parking, but there’s a paid lot about three blocks away that’s not too expensive. If you’re looking for room service and marble bathrooms, keep scrolling. But if you want a clean, functional base in Karlovy Vary where you can actually feel like you’re staying in a real neighborhood instead of a tourist zone, and you don’t mind climbing some stairs, this place delivers exactly what it promises.
