Hotel Maltezský Kříž

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Maltezský Kříž?

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Maltezský Kříž? The name sounds way fancier than it actually is – it means “Maltese Cross” in Czech, which had me expecting some grand historical monument. Instead, you get this honest, no-frills 3-star place that’s perfectly situated on Stará Louka, right in that sweet spot where you’re close enough to everything but not drowning in tourist chaos.

The location is honestly the real winner here. You’re literally a 5-minute stroll from the main colonnade where everyone’s sipping those famous mineral waters (fair warning – they taste like someone dissolved coins in hot water, but locals swear by them). I mean, you can hear the gentle bustle of the promenade from some rooms, but it’s not the kind of noise that’ll keep you up – more like a comforting hum that reminds you you’re in the heart of one of Europe’s most storied spa towns. The hotel sits on the quieter end of the street, so you avoid the worst of the tour group stampedes that hit around 10 AM. Parking can be a bit tricky – there’s street parking nearby, but honestly, you won’t need a car much once you’re settled in.

The rooms themselves? Well, they’re exactly what you’d expect from a solid 3-star in a historic spa town – clean, functional, with that slightly dated European charm that either annoys you or grows on you depending on your mood. The staff actually knows the area, which is refreshing – they’ll point you toward the lesser-known hot springs or tell you which restaurants locals actually eat at (hint: avoid anything directly on the colonnade unless you enjoy tourist prices). What impressed me was how they handle the shoulder seasons – Karlovy Vary can get pretty quiet in late fall and early spring, but this place maintains its standards year-round. The breakfast is nothing revolutionary, but it’s hearty Czech fare that’ll fuel you for a day of wandering those gorgeous 19th-century streets. You’ll find yourself walking past grand hotels charging three times the price, and honestly? Unless you absolutely need marble bathrooms and a concierge in a tailcoat, you’re getting the same Karlovy Vary experience for a fraction of the cost. The 7.8 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises.

Best hotels in Karlovy Vary range from charming boutique properties in the historic spa district to elegant grand hotels with stunning views of the thermal valley and surrounding forests.

Wonderful The location of the hotel is excellent, everything is nearby, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. There's even a coffee machine at the reception.

What could be improved: Could have been a tiny bit cleaner, it doesn't make the best impression when you find traces of dust in the wardrobe.

Great room and location with no extra facilities Perfect location.
Big room with great heating.

What could be improved: No reception staff available, even for checkout.
The phone numbers at reception to call for help either didn't work or were unanswered.
The cleaner/ breakfast cook was friendly and tried to help but didn't speak English.

Very Good The hotel is a small one, but it has everything I needed. The room is like an apartment with separate bedroom and living room. And is super spacious and comfortable. Most importantly, our apartment was very quiet and sleeping was fantastic. The breakfast is limited but you won't be hungry. And, location!

Wonderful Everything except the staff. Good price, comfortable, clean.

What could be improved: The staff is super lazy and annoying. On the day of arrival they will spam your phone number like a crazy ex, about your arrival and if you have a question and try to ask them, they will ignore it.

Gorgeous Penthouse, But Inconvenience Parking -Beautiful penhouse apartment.
-Well-equipped kitchen.
-As beautiful as photos on Booking.com

What could be improved: -Staff was not so responsive.
-We a have roof window which cannot be opened. We asked them to check and they said they will do. But they did not. And this room became unbearably warm so two people needed to sleep in the hallway…
-No ventilator no AC, very warm in August.
-It is a pain to look for parking around the hotel and the staff was not very helpful. The public one they told us has only very limited parking spaces.
